One and a half grams of chia oil per day: more muscle, less fat

Supplementation with one and a half grams of chia oil may reduce fat mass in fat people - and at the same time may slightly increase muscle mass. We formulate things carefully, because we do not base ourselves on human research, but on an animal study. Brazilian molecular researchers, affiliated with the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, published it in Nutrition.

Study
The researchers gave a group of male mice standard food [C] for 135 days, and another group of food in which they had hidden extra energy [HFD; high fat diet]. From day 90 of the experiment, half of the high fat diet mice got chia oil through the food.

The Brazilians used a product from the Chilean Benexia. [benexia.com]

If the mice had been adult humans, they would have taken 1300-1800 milligrams of chia oil daily. That is a reasonable dose.

Results
Chia oil administration inhibited the increase in body weight. When the researchers determined the body composition of the mice, they saw that chia oil had put the brakes on the growth of the fat mass and had actually stimulated the growth of the fat-free mass - read: muscle mass.

Chia oil made the animals more sensitive to insulin, the researchers discovered.

Mechanism
"To understand where in the insulin signaling pathway the chia oil supplement acts to improve glucose tolerance, we analyzed the expression and/or activation of key proteins involved in insulin signaling in skeletal muscle from the high fat diet and high fat diet + chia oil mice", write the researchers.

"Total Akt content did not differ between the two groups, but Akt was highly phosphorylated in the skeletal muscle or high fat diet + chia oil mice after stimulation with insulin."

"Ultimately, we evaluated the translocation of GLUT4 to the plasma membrane after insulin stimulation in skeletal muscle from the high fat diet and high fat diet + chia oil groups. Upon insulin stimulation, GLUT4 was readily translocated to the membrane in skeletal muscle from the high fat diet + chia oil mice. However, the treatment with insulin failed to induce GLUT4 translocation in the high fat diet mice."

Conclusion
"The results of this preclinical mechanistic study provided evidence that the use of chia oil could improve obese comorbidities even when offered along with an obesogenic diet", conclude the researchers.
