Why supplements are a better source of 10-DHA than fresh Royal Jelly
Perhaps the most important bioactive substance in Royal Jelly is the fatty acid 10-HDA [in full: 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid]. 10-DHA causes Royal Jelly's prohormonal and anti-aging effects. According to a 2007 Chinese study, freeze-dried Royal Jelly powder supplements are an excellent source of 10-HDA.Study
In 2007, chemists from the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture published an analysis of a dozen fresh Royal Jelly products and nearly two dozen freeze-dried Royal Jelly powders in the Journal of AOAC International. Supplements mainly contain freeze-dried powders
Results
The fresh products consisted of 1.3 to 2.2 percent of 10-HDA, the powders of 3 to 6.2 percent. Click on the figure for a larger version.

The researchers are not surprised that lyophilized powders are such a good source of 10-DHA. "To extend shelf life, Royal Jelly cream can be freeze-dried to lyophilized powder", they write. "Freeze-drying is the process that best maintains the natural characteristics of the product.""The freeze-drying process produced a significant reduction in product weight of 66%, so the large variation of 10-HDA content could be explained by the fact that after freeze-drying the concentration of lyophilized powder is 3 times that of Royal Jelly cream."
