Jay Gruden was hired as the Washington Redskins' coach Thursday, succeeding Mike Shanahan and joining a 3-13 team after working the last three seasons as the Cincinnati Bengals' offensive coordinator.

FOX Sports 1 Insider Jay Glazer reports the deal is for five years.

In ending their 10-day coaching search, the Redskins said Gruden would be introduced at an afternoon news conference.

With the Bengals, the 46-year-old Gruden helped develop Andy Dalton. Now he'll have the task of grooming another young franchise quarterback, Robert Griffin III.

Gruden, the brother of former NFL coach and "Monday Night Football" analyst Jon Gruden, had drawn interest from at least three other teams seeking head coaches. He interviewed with the Tennessee Titans on Tuesday.

Shanahan was fired last week after a season that ended with eight consecutive losses. The Redskins finished last in the NFC East during three of Shanahan's four seasons in Washington, a time marked by discord among ownership, quarterback and coach.

Gruden will become owner Dan Snyder's eighth coach in 16 seasons as an NFL owner. The span includes just four winning seasons and seven last-place finishes.

Gruden interviewed with the Redskins on Wednesday, becoming the last of six candidates to meet with general manager Bruce Allen. Gruden had an inside track on the job because of his ties with Allen and others in the Washington organization.

Gruden worked with Allen, Redskins defensive backs coach Raheem Morris and tight ends coach Sean McVay while with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Gruden was an assistant with Tampa Bay from 2002-08, then coached under Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett with the United Football League's Florida Tuskers in 2009.

Morris, McVay and Haslett were retained when Shanahan was fired, leaving it up to Gruden as to whether he will keep them on his new staff.

Gruden is a member of the Arena Football League Hall of Fame, elected in 1999 after a career as a successful player and coach in the indoor league. His previous head coaching stints have come in Arena Football with the Orlando Predators and in the UFL with the Tuskers, whom he led to the UFL championship game the year after Haslett left to join the Redskins.

Personally I think RGIII is a better qb than dalton... but he does need to be tamed a little bit...

Happy to see Gruden gone here. I think the combination of Dalton, Gruden, and Marvin Lewis was toxic at times. I think Lewis is more of an overseer and can't make adjustments and relies on coordinator to do that. Gruden, for as good as he is at times, just will suddenly change tactics when the offense is clicking. Dalton...well I said it to start the season...he's good enough to get them to the playoffs, but not to win a game for them.

I was listening to ESPN radio this morning and they were saying Gruden signed with the skins. I was like "fuk yeah, now I wont have to listen to the mf'er on Monday Night Football anymore". Then I kept listening I realized it was Jay and not Jon. Twas a dissapointing day.

RG3 has 2-3 seasons left in him....he's just another Michael Vick that isn't as fast and doesn't have as good of a arm strength wise....as a Texans fan I cringe of thinking we will get Bridgewater or Manziel....best move is to trade down and get depth and/or a legit 6'4"-6'5" pocket passer...ie; Tom Brady...Payton Manning....Andrew Luck etc...outside of Drew Brees all the best teams have big pocket passers...

^^^If I was a Texas fan, I'd be wanting to draft a LB (Cushing is done)....then try to pick up Josh McCown from the Bears. I don't really see any great QBs coming out of this draft. Certainly not one worth spending a top 5 pics on.

But you know dem Cleveland Browns are dying to pick Johnny Manziel... even though I think they should pick Sammy Watkins!

I have a feeling Manziel's gonna get murdered in the pros.

I think 1 of 2 things will happen...

He will be the next big thing... or he will get hit so hard by someone like BJ Raji and get a collapsed lung and never play again... LOL
