Phyllanthus amarus prevents hangover

Ethnopharmacologists know Phyllanthus amarus as a plant that has shown undeniable anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects in animal studies. Researchers at the University of Malaya write in Pharmaceutical Biology that they have found a more profanse application for Phyllanthus amarus. A remarkably low dose of the plant reduces hangover symptoms after excessive alcohol consumption.

Study
The researchers got 15 healthy test subjects with an average age of 25 to drink Jack Daniel's Whiskey on 2 different occasions until they had an alcohol content of 0.12 percent. With so much alcohol in your blood, you still remember your name, but you can't pronounce it correctly anymore.

The researchers then monitored the subjects for 22 hours.

On one occasion, the test subjects took a placebo every day 10 days before drinking. On the other occasion, they received a tablet with 375 milligram ethanol extract of the leaves of Phyllanthus amarus twice a day.

The researchers used Phyllpro, a product from the Malaysian Biotropics Malaysia. [biotropicsmalaysia.com] Phyllpro consists of 0.1 percent hypophyllanthin and 0.4 percent phyllanthin.

Sponsor
The lead author of the study is on the Biotropics Malaysia payroll. Biotropics also financed the study.

Results
The alcohol disappeared from test subjects' blood faster if they had used Phyllanthus amarus.

Supplementation with Phyllanthus amarus reduced traditional hangover symptoms such as headache, diarrhea, dizziness and tremulousness.

Mechanism
"The potential mechanism of action of hepatoprotection and reduction in hangover symptoms in alcohol-induced toxicity may be exerted through the improved antioxidant status as Phyllanthus amarus demonstrated liver function improvement through decreased levels of liver function enzymes and increased antioxidant enzymes", write the researchers. [J Ethnopharmacol. 2007 Nov 1;114(2):169-73.] [Food Chem Toxicol. 2008 Aug;46(8):2658-64.]

"Hepatoprotective effects of medicinal plants against short term toxins have been observed in animal studies. The detoxification effect seen particularly in the liver has been reported in several closely related Phyllanthus species." [PubMed]

Conclusion
"The ethanol extract of Phyllanthys amarus, Phyllpro, significantly improved hangover symptoms when compared with placebo", the researchers summarize. "The results of this study suggest that this product may be of interest to generally healthy adults for the treatment of hangover symptoms."

"Further research is still needed to confirm the mechanism of action of Phyllpro, however, and to study its effects in older individuals and in individuals drinking varying amounts of alcohol."
