Do you want to lose some fat? Replace whey concentrate with whey hydrolysate

Strength athletes who want to lose some of their fat mass may consider replacing the whey concentrate in their protein shakes with whey hydrolysate. Whey hydrolysate stimulates muscle growth just as well as whey concentrate, but also causes fat loss in one way or another. American researchers reported this in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

Study
The researchers divided 56 young men, who had been training with weights for quite some time, into 4 groups. During the 8 weeks that the experiment lasted, all men trained in an identical way. The training schedule was pretty challenging.

All men drank 2 shakes a day. On the training days, the test subjects took a shake before they started training, and another shake afterwards. On the days they didn't train, the men took their shakes between meals.

The placebo group [PLA] received shakes with glucose. Each shake contained 30 grams of glucose.

The remaining 3 groups received protein shakes. The first experimental group received shakes with 30 grams of whey concentrate, the second experimental group was given shakes with high lactoferrin whey concentrate and a third experimental group received shakes with 30 grams of whey hydrolysate.

The research was conducted by Christopher Lockwood, a consultant for the supplement industry. He paid part of the research himself, but also received additional funding from the Scivation, a company acquired by Nutrabolt in 2017, [businesswire.com April 03, 2017] and Progenex. [progenexfit.com]

Results
Supplementation with glucose, whey concentrate, high-lactoferrin whey concentrate and whey hydrolysate had about the same effect on muscle mass and strength.

Conclusion
"Whey protein hydrolysate supplementation is seemingly more beneficial than whey protein concentrate in reducing body fat while simultaneously increasing muscle mass during resistance training", summarizes Lockwood. "This finding should be further investigated in overweight/obese populations."

According to a Japanese animal study, whey hydrolysate contains peptides that make the muscles more sensitive to insulin and increase the absorption of nutrients from the bloodstream. However, the researchers could not detect an effect on the insulin and glucose balance of whey hydrolysate. They can therefore say little about the way in which whey hydrolysate reduces the fat mass.

Well ... they do have a theory. But we'll talk about that another time.
