Bifidobacterium breve B-3 accelerates body fat breakdown in human study
Last week we wrote about an animal study in which supplementation with the probiotic Bifidobacterium breve B-3 made muscles bigger and stronger. Researchers from Morinaga, Japan, published a study in 2018 in which they gave the same bacterium to humans. Without the test subjects changing their way of life, they became a little leaner.Study
The researchers divided 81 healthy but somewhat plump test subjects into 2 groups. For 12 weeks one group took 2 capsules without active substances every day, while the other group took 2 capsules daily with 10-10 CFUs of Bifidobacterium breve B-3. The test subjects took the capsules during a meal.

Results
Bifidobacterium breve B-3 reduced the fat mass and the fat percentage. Supplementation with the probiotic had no effect on body weight, but did reduce the abdominal circumference of the subjects.

The decrease in abdominal circumference was the result of a decreased amount of abdominal fat, you see at the bottom left. However, this decrease was not accompanied by a decrease in muscle mass, the figure in the lower right said. The muscle mass even seemed to increase slightly in the experimental group.

Side effects

Supplementation with Bifidobacterium breve B-3 did not have any negative side effects. However, the amount of triglycerides in the blood of the test subjects in the experimental group decreased slightly. [Table] That's positive. This decrease is probably a direct consequence of the suspected mechanism of action of Bifidobacterium breve B-3. The researchers think that the bacteria stimulate the activity of Cyp4a enzymes in the liver. Cyp4a enzymes are involved in the oxidation of fatty acids. [Biochem Pharmacol. 2008;75(12):2263-75.]
Conclusion
"The present study demonstrated that daily consumption of Bifidobacterium breve B-3 at a dose of 20 billion CFU/day for 12 weeks exerted significant reducing effects on body fat in healthy pre-obese adults without any adverse effects", the researchers summarize.

"Bifidobacterium breve B-3 [...] may be useful for preventing body fat accumulation and related metabolic disorders in pre-obese individuals."
