Hormonal impact DHEA modest in men, significant in women

In the anabolic steroids scene, DHEA is regarded as a barely effective prohormone. The ergogenic effect is subtle - so subtle that you can wonder why DHEA is on the doping list at all. As long as we talk about male DHEA users, of course. But when women use DHEA, well... That's a different story. This is the conclusion of a human study published by French doping researchers at the Universite Orleans in Endocrine.Study

The researchers experimented with 11 female and 10 male recreational athletes, who had been training for at least three years 3-5 times a week. The athletes' average workout lasted 60-90 minutes. The test subjects were 20-21 years on average. The women used contraceptives. For 4 weeks, the test subjects took 100 milligrams of DHEA daily. They had to take the capsule between half past six and seven in the morning.

Results
In the women, the administration of DHEA resulted in a substantial increase of the testosterone levels. In the men the increase was modest.

DHEA also increased the concentration of estrone in the subjects. Estron is a precursor of the female sex hormone estradiol. Again the effect was stronger with women.
DHEA also increased the levels of DHEA, androstenedione and DHT. DHEA, however, had little or no influence on the concentration of IGF-1, cortisol and free T3 hormone.
