A supplement containing CBD, the non-psychoactive compound in cannabis, may be an alternative to pharmacological sleep aids and anxiolytics. Psychiatrists at the University of Colorado discovered this when they experimented with 72 subjects with anxiety disorders and sleeping problems.Study
The subjects were 18-72 years of age and were treated in a psychiatric clinic. In most cases, they received a capsule containing 25 milligrams of CBD every day for 3 months, but some subjects received 50 or 75 milligrams of CBD per day.

The subjects knew they were receiving CBD, and there was no control group. The researchers determined the sleep quality of the subjects with the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index [PSQI]. The higher you score on the PSQI, the worse your sleep. The highest score possible on the PSQI is 23.
The researchers measured the degree to which the subjects were anxious or concerned with another questionnaire, the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale [HAM-A]. The higher you score on that, the bigger your problem. The maximum score on the HAM-A is 56.
A score below 17 stands for mild anxiety, a score above 25 stands for severe anxiety.

Results
CBD improved sleep and made subjects less anxious and anxious. The effect on sleep did not seem to increase after the first month, but the effect on anxiety and anxiety became a little stronger every month.

"Anxiety scores decreased fairly rapidly, and this decrease was sustained during the study period", write the researchers. "These results are consistent with the existing preclinical and clinical data on CBD"
Side effects
CBD had few side effects. Two subjects felt fatigued and dropped out of the study. Three other subjects felt drowsy, but those effects disappeared after a few weeks. "CBD appears to be better tolerated than routine psychiatric medications", the researchers conclude.
