Looking for a one hundred percent safe and effective pre-workout formula?
Pre-workout supplementation works, but some companies sometimes put risky and experimental substances in their formulas. Athletes who prefer to avoid pre-workout products will undoubtedly find the human study that Ghent scientists published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition interesting.
Study

The researchers got 14 recreational athletes to cycle as fast as possible for 8 minutes on 2 occasions. On one occasion they had drunk a bowl of chicken soup [CB] 40 minutes before getting on the bike, on the other they had drunk a bowl of vegan soup [Placebo].The chicken soup contained the histidine dipeptides carnosine and anserine. The subjects were given 46.4 milligrams of histidine dipeptides per kilogram of body weight.
These dipeptides were not present in the vegan soup.

Results
Supplementation with chicken soup - read: carnosine and anserine - increased the power with which the subjects could cycle by 5 percent. In plain English, this means that they could pedal harder, cycle faster and thus also cover a greater distance during the time trial.

Mechanism
The researchers do not know how chicken soup improved endurance. Although they found that supplementing with chicken soup increased the concentration of carnosine and anserine in the blood, they have no idea how these two dipeptides improved physical performance.

The researchers had expected that chicken soup would activate the antioxidant glutathione, but this was not the case.
