High vitamin D levels help keep heart patients alive
A high vitamin D level does not only protect your health if you are completely fine. Chinese researchers found that optimal vitamin D status also reduces the risk of death in heart patients.[FONT=&quot]

Study
Chinese cardiologists at Huazhong University of Science and Technology analyzed data from 37079 Britons, who participated in the UK Biobank study, with cardiovascular disease. For example, the British had had a heart attack or stroke, or suffered from heart failure.

The researchers were able to follow the study participants for just under twelve years and knew how much vitamin D was present in their blood.
Results
The higher the concentration of vitamin D in the blood of the study participants, the lower their risk of death. With every 10 nanomoles per liter that the concentration of vitamin D in the blood increased, the risk of death decreased by 12 percent.

The figure above shows the relationship between the concentration of vitamin D and the risk of death from a cardiovascular cause. For every 10 nanomoles per liter that the concentration of vitamin D in the blood increased, the risk of death from a cardiovascular cause decreased by 9 percent.
Conclusion
"These findings suggest that elevated serum 25(OH)D concentration benefits CVD patients with vitamin D deficiency," the researchers summarized their findings.
