Bifidobacterium breve B3, a probiotic for your muscles
Researchers from the Japanese dairy company Morinaga Milk Industry have discovered that the probiotic bacterium Bifidobacterium breve B3 makes muscles of test animals stronger. In a way that is not clear, the bacterium activates anabolic signal molecules in the muscle cells.
Morinaga adds Bifidobacterium breve B3 to dairy products, but western consumers who want to use the probiotic bacterium are dependent on supplements such as Genius Pro-GT from The Genius Brand. However, practically everything we know about the health-promoting properties of this probiotic is based on research conducted at Morinaga.
Study
The researchers gave rats and mice living [B-3L] or heat-killed 10-9 CFUs Bifidobacterium breve B3 [B3-HK], nothing [Control] or 1 millimole of leucine per kilo per day for 6 days a week. The experiment lasted 4 weeks.
Results
When the 4 weeks were over, the rats that had received Bifidobacterium breve B3 had a little more muscle than the other animals. This trend was only statistically significant for the soleus muscle.
In the soleus of the rats, Bifidobacterium breve B3 had switched on the anabolic signal molecule Akt. Bifidobacterium breve B3 had no effect on mTOR, but it did on Akt and AMPK.
In mice that received heat-killed Bifidobacterium breve B3 for 2 or 4 weeks, muscle strength increased. The effect of the supplementation did not seem to increase as the supplementation lasted longer.
Conclusions
"These findings may contribute to the understanding of the mechanism of the anti-obesity effects of Bifidobacterium breve B3 and suggest its potential benefits for improving physical fitness and ameliorating physical fatigue and muscle atrophy; in particular, after heat-killing treatment", summarize the researchers.
