Ashwagandha enhances athletes' endurance
Athletes who take 2 capsules with an extract of ashwagandha every day become fitter, according to a human study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology. Ashwagandha increases maximal oxygen uptake [VO2max], the most important predictor of endurance.

Study

Researchers from OM Research Center and the BMV Hospital and Research Center in India's Uttar Pradesh divided 50 athletic adults aged 18-45 years into 2 groups. For 8 weeks, the subjects in one group took a placebo daily, while the subjects in the other group took 2 capsules each day, each capsule containing 300 milligrams of ashwagandha extract. In total, these subjects took 600 milligrams of extract per day.The researchers used KSM-66, a product of Ixoreal Biomed. The publication does not list Ixoreal as a sponsor, but despite this, supplement industry media quote Ixoreal extensively when reporting the new study. These quotes show that Ixoreal is well versed in what's in the scientific pipeline as far as KSM-66 is concerned.

Results
Just before the supplementation period started and when it had ended, the researchers got the subjects to run a 12-minute Cooper test, so that they could determine the subjects' maximum oxygen uptake [VO2max]. VO2max is still the most important predictor of cardiovascular fitness and endurance.

Ashwagandha increased VO2max.

Conclusions
"The present study suggested that the considered study population responded well to the root extract of ashwagandha", write the researchers.

"Extensive preclinical and clinical studies are required to establish the safety and efficacy of the ashwagandha formulations that may provide better health to future generations."actical point of view, glutamine supplementation could help in recovery after intense and demanding eccentric exercises that produce muscle damage with a high risk of lesions."
