SHAWN RAY UNDER FIRE

The fans tend to speak from both sides of their mouths. I’m a big believer in giving the fans what they want and I’m also a big believer that the competitors make the sport. The bottom line is that the internet became huge because people got tired of a media that stuck to certain talking points. Back in the magazine days, major publications controlled the sport, with most taking their marching orders from federations and supplement companies.

Energy drinks are one of the fastest-growing categories and with so many brands out there, it’s getting difficult to keep up with them all – which can be exciting when you enjoy trying new things. That said, you have the old school energy drink brands like Red Bull and Rockstar and then you have the new kids on the block coming on strong and stealing a good portion of the market share such as Bang Energy and Reign. But what happened to Rockstar? No one is talking about them anymore.

Do you think it’s a good idea to sell your products everywhere? Maybe? Maybe not? Here’s the thing about business… it’s always changing and what works for most may not work for you. Most people will tell you to go get your product into a distributors hands and push it out to every retailer you can – c-store, specialty, food, drug, mass, etc. I’m actually going to tell you to NOT sell your products everywhere and go against the grain and the norm.

Major media outlets are tripping over themselves to try to make this year’s Olympia about a reigning champion and a has-been. Brandon Curry won the Olympia in 2019 against a stacked a lineup which included William “The Conqueror” Bonac, Roelly Winklaar, and Iranian sensation Hadi Choopan. Curry had won the Arnold Classic and then went on to make history, winning the most prestigious title in the sport of bodybuilding that same year. In 2020, given all the chaos and all the insanity, the best bodybuilders in the world answered the call, competing on stages throughout the U.S. and internationally.

If nothing else, this article should be a wake-up call to all Americans that something needs to be done regarding their health and weight before it’s too late. I’m not here to “body shame” or “promote any sort of negative body image,” but rather explain the reality of how out of shape and unhealthy Americans really are. Quite frankly, it’s down-right frightening to see these new statistics.

TONY HUGE – CREATING A NICHE ALL HIS OWN

The fitness industry is quite possibly the most competitive, insulated, and cutthroat business in the world. It’s competitive because it’s dominated by alpha males and females. If you’re weak – on any level – you’ll get annihilated. You’ll lose your mind, your business will go bust, and you’ll be all but forgotten from one day to the next. Bodybuilding, as a sport, has been called many things. One concept that tends to stick, is that it’s a cult sport. Some call it a microcosm, others describe it as a subculture. Whatever terminology you may prefer to use, the bottom line is that fitness is very much insulated.

I remember back in the day, when if you wanted to lose weight, you went to your local supplement store and picked up a bottle of Hydroxycut – it was THE go-to weight loss supplement. At the time, it was under the MuscleTech label but has since branched out on its own and has seemingly disappeared from the sports nutrition side of the industry and has gone more mass market. While to each his own, the name is no longer on the tip of anyone’s tongue (at least not in our industry). Now, they are launching what they are calling Cut energy drink.

SHIPPING TIME WILL BE THE NEXT BIG CONSUMER DEMAND

I like to sit here and gaze into my crystal ball every now and then to see what the future holds for the fitness and supplement industries. Ok, I’m lying. Well, partially. I don’t have a crystal ball, and I have zero knowledge about consumer demand or trends, but I like to toss my opinions out there every once in a while, based on what I’m seeing. That said, I feel like there may be another big consumer demand forming that supplement brands should be getting in front of before it sweeps through, and they are left playing catch up. What is this big consumer demand? It’s shipping time.
