WAS HADI CHOOPAN ROBBED?

by Christian Duque

For starters, I’m not a big fan of the term being “robbed,” simply because bodybuilding is a subjective sport and whatever the judges are looking for, is correct. Unlike objective sports (e.g. basketball, baseball, football), when it comes to physique based sports, those who score the various rounds, are looking for criteria that corresponds with what they believe will collectively decide the winner. This is why different judging panels in different regions of a country could award placings significantly differently than others. This is part of the reason why I have always contended that bodybuilding is one of the toughest sports on the planet.

Frank Sinatra sang that if you could make it in New York, you could make it anywhere. The same can be said for the very, very few who can make living a living from fitness. Many who can, do so while working in a variety of roles. For those who take the time and study hard, personal training certifications are a great way to earn income. Those who put the time in and develop good customer service skills, can literally write their own ticket. Others will work at gyms, health food stores, and/or take gigs working at booths at busy expos.

IS DOWNSIZING THE ANSWER TO PHYSIQUE ISSUES IN BODYBUILDING?

It’s 2021 and bodybuilders are bigger than they’ve ever been and there has been much talk regarding which bodybuilder is better than another in a different era and what the separation is between bodybuilders of today and yesteryears. While I’m not going to get into that debate in particular because I have too much respect for ALL the bodybuilders across all eras, I AM going to talk about an area I feel that has gotten out of control. In my opinion, it all stems back to the bigger is better and it’s causing major physique issues.

THE BODYBUILDING GROCERY LIST: MUSCLE ON A BUDGET

When you think about sports and what all goes into getting involved with them, most sports require very little. Perhaps the most basic sports are those that are big in impoverished parts of the world. It really doesn’t get much more basic than soccer. Other sports require a little bit more, but not much more. You can stay pretty basic, with baseball (e.g. stickball), basketball, and football, as well. There’s also sports that automatically are associated with big price tags. These include golf and tennis. I mean think about it, what comes to mind when you think about golf? I think of business execs, rolling around in carts, drinking Arnold Palmers and complaining about their bonuses.

IS PHIL HEATH FINISHED? WAS HE “GIFTED” 3RD PLACE AT THE OLYMPIA?

The 2020 Olympia was full of excitement. We had a new location, a new date, the return of Phil Heath, Brandon Curry back to defend his title, and a Big Ramy telling everyone that “Winter is Coming.” What unfolded at the Olympia was nothing short of amazing. Fans cheered from their seats, watch parties online had people posting their excitement, and at the end of the night, we had a new Mr. Olympia champion crowned.

Not everyone comes out of the womb with a silver spoon in their hand. For the majority of us, we have to scratch, claw, and fight for everything we want in life. Yet, some people expect things to simply be handed to them, and when they aren’t, it’s the world’s fault in their eyes – not their own. These people look in the mirror and are unhappy with what they see. They aren’t pleased with where they are in life. Many of them don’t know what to do. We all have choices to make with our life. And if you want to improve your life, you’re going to need to change your situation.

A CBD BEVERAGE COLLABORATION BETWEEN KILL CLIFF AND JOE ROGAN?

Kill Cliff is a brand that needs no introduction. Now, Joe Rogan, on the other hand… just kidding. This is probably one of the coolest things I’ve seen from a collaboration standpoint other than the things Ghost Lifestyle is doing with their unique flavor partnerships. Kill Cliff has been selling a CBD beverage for a little while now, but with the man, himself, Joe Rogan putting his hand in the cookie jar, you know there’s going to be something special happening.

THE DETERMINATION OF JAKE WOOD

It’s safe to say that 2020 has been the year from hell for public events. From concerts to major league sporting events to bodybuilding contests. Many competitors called it quits for 2020. Amateurs opted to vy for pro cards in 2021; pro’s decided to look into different ways to earn income than to prep for contests that may or may not happen. From all the meals, to the gear, the training at gyms that were open one week and closed the next, it just didn’t make financial sense. Not to mention the fact that most competitors don’t even place in the money to begin with and money at any show besides the Arnold or Olympia, isn’t exactly going to buy you any fancy houses or cool rides.

DID BIG RAMY REALLY DESERVE A SPECIAL INVITE? WILL HE DISAPPOINT US AGAIN?

I’m going to be fully transparent. I’ve sat on writing this article for nearly a month now, and while I may have some people who disagree with me, I need to put it out there. The question of “Did Big Ramy really deserve a special invitation?” has been floating around the industry for weeks now, and you have groups on both sides of the debate. Who’s right? Well, neither are wrong. Both have a right to their opinion, and both sides have valid points. That said, I’m going to try to stay right down the middle in this debate even though I favor one side heavily (and you’ll probably figure it out if you continue reading).
