Joint Pain in the Summer? Here’s Why!

by Anthony Roberts

Whether you’ve just started training, or you have a couple of decades under your belt, you’ve probably experienced joint pain. And although the cold of winter months can cause additional stiffness and add time to your warm-ups, the summer months can actually make joints hurt worse than they do in colder weather.

Take Charge of Muscle Building and Fat Burning Hormones With Intermittent Fasting

We were once programmed to believe that a low-fat, high carbohydrate diet was the key to a fitter society that would be less prone to disease. That didn’t help matters and the rate of obesity and disease climbed. The low carb/high protein diet would eventually replace the low-fat diet as the answer to obesity. With this diet it was acceptable to consume large amounts of dietary fats. It’s still believed that a person can become lean and healthy while consuming large amounts of protein and fats, while avoiding carbohydrates. The argument here is that our ancestors ate in this manner and didn’t have an obesity problem like we do today. It can easily be argued that our distant ancestors spent a lot of time and energy hunting and preparing food, and the calorie demand would be much higher than it would be for a person living today’s lifestyle.

Fat Shaming vs Public Acceptance?

I’d like to start off this article by mentioning I have no issues with people’s weight, their skin color, their sexual orientation, their hair color, eye color, how big their ears are, car they drive, house they live in… You get the point. I worry about ME. If someone is happy being overweight, good for them. Do I believe it’s unhealthy and would love to see them work towards bettering their life and health? Definitely. But to each his own.

The Testosterone Stigma

I can’t imagine that there is any other substance found naturally in the human body that’s been more controversial than the hormone, testosterone. Even though it’s naturally produced in men, and in low amounts in women, its synthetic version is a Schedule III narcotic. To put how ridiculous this is into perspective, a comparison can be made to the female hormone estrogen. Like testosterone, estrogen is produced by both men and women. Estrogen is produced in much higher amounts in women. This hormone is what makes a woman a woman, and testosterone is what makes a man a man. High levels of estrogen in women have been reported to increase the risk of breast cancer.

Phosphatidylserine and Athletic Performance

Genuine advances in sports nutrition are rare, which is why the discovery back in the 90s that creatine supplementation really did improve anaerobic performance created such a stir. However, apart from caffeine use, there’s been no equivalent ‘magic bullet’ supplement for aerobic athletes. But according to Andrew Hamilton, new research on a naturally occurring compound called phosphatidylserine is proving very intriguing indeed

Why the Fitness and Beauty Industry is Fake AF

As you can probably tell by the title of this article, I’m mad. Not only am I mad because I wasn’t given the features that many consider attractive (you can’t have it all), but I’m madder about the fact that we are led to believe that people in the fitness and beauty industry are damn near flawless. I’ve been in the fitness industry for well over a decade and have several friends in the beauty industry. We often joke about how our industries these days are basically promoting perfection, yet it’s all a front. Everyone has something to hide, and they do—almost daily.

Selfies: Powerful Weight Loss Tool?

Social media can be a terrible platform for people to sit on. With internet bullies across the globe, exposing yourself and your family through the use of “selfies” can be a scary thought, sometimes even dangerous. But what if you simply don’t care? Let the negativity roll right off your shoulders. You can’t please everyone. You want to do something to keep yourself accountable for your health. And that’s exactly what one strong woman did.

Obesity Paradoxes: Fat But Still Fit?

  • 7 min read

If you’re fat, then you must be sick too, right? After all, countless studies have found associations between higher body mass index (BMI) and risk of disease (death too!) In fact, obesity has been linked to at least 20 diseases including diabetes, hypertension cardiovascular disease and even cancer. But why is it that some people are obese but not unhealthy? How do we explain this seeming paradox? Can you improve your health while you’re still overweight? And if you’re fat but healthy, should you bother losing weight at all? Hmmm… interesting questions… and I have answers!

Are You Suffering From Andropause?

We’ve all heard of menopause, right? It’s when a woman goes through the “change of life,” meaning that she’s leaving her reproductive years behind. It’s a transition period where her body produces less hormones, causing all sorts of physical changes. When going through menopause, most women experience emotional changes as well. Mood swings are common. As men, we’ve always stood on the sidelines watching our women go through this change, feeling bad for them of course but secretly thinking, “glad it’s not me!”
