IS ANY ONE BODYBUILDER BIGGER THAN THE SPORT OF BODYBUILDING?

  • 6 min read

by Matt Weik

Here of late, we are seeing a movement of bodybuilders criticizing other bodybuilders and throwing shade at the entire sport of bodybuilding. It raises the question of it there is any ONE bodybuilder who is bigger than the sport of bodybuilding? Does ONE individual have so much influence that it can change the direction of the sport? You know I like to keep it real and I’m an open book, so my thoughts could very well send some people into a rage. But they are my thoughts and opinions so here goes anyway.

How many times have you heard that if you want to maintain a healthy weight or see any type of weight loss that you need to eat breakfast? That if you skip breakfast, you’re going to slow down your metabolism, go blind in one eye, lose all your gains, and die alone? Ok, that may be a stretch, but you get the point.

THE BRANDON HARDING, GREG DOUCETTE SITUATION

When a competitor finds a coach, it’s very much like when two halves make a whole, with each new day being better than the last. When a competitor finds a new coach, it’s a real brotherhood (or sisterhood); you are no longer two wandering souls, rather, you are one. Concepts of teamwork, loyalty, and transparency get thrown around. Goals get set, followed by a great deal of motivational quotes, fist pounds, and just unbridled enthusiasm.

Consumer demand drives innovation – it’s as simple as that. And what it comes down to is who can be first to market with various new opportunities and capitalize? For the longest time consumers have been sick of the way whole foods have been trending. There were a bunch of gaps nutritionally that caused many to move towards supplements to achieve their daily requirements. But then came a lack of trust in dietary supplements. This has now caused the movement to shift back to a whole food health option movement and innovation. We have started calling this functional food and beverages.

The respiratory Coronavirus is making headlines, as the Chinese city of Wuhan is currently being quarantined, with countless Americans being evacuated. Over the weekend, three more cases of possible infection have been cited in the United States, while 63 have been tested and 100 others are being closely monitored nationally, concerns are mounting. All five infected in the U.S. had traveled to Wuhan. One of the folks infected is a gentleman in his 50’s in Orange County, CA, who was admitted to a local hospital and is said to be in isolation. Another patient checked himself in after reporting symptoms at LAX.

The 2020 bodybuilding season is underway and already there have been some shakeups that have bodybuilding fans’ jaws dropping. The first one that I reported on was the fact that the IFBB has revoked Shawn Rhoden’s IFBB pro card and has told him he cannot compete in any IFBB sanctioned contests until his legal matter is over. With that being said, I can only assume that if found guilty, he may never get his IFBB pro status back. But in this article, I specifically want to dive deep into the latest news regarding Roelly Winklaar pulling out of the 2020 Arnold Classic.

NICK TRIGILI VEHEMENTLY DISAGREES WITH TONY HUGE

IFBB Pro, Mr. USA Nick Trigili went on record yesterday, taking Tony Huge to task on a new video. I personally, won’t call him Dr. only because he’s not an MD and as a JD, I’d never expect anyone to call me doctor. That being said, it’s a cute marketing tactic, if anything else. And that’s what most of Huge’s schtick might be, particularly with his latest round of promo for the upcoming Generation Iron follow-up, Enhanced 2, which showcases Tony’s take on experimental supplementation while employing various publicity angles, from catchphrases, humor, and the cameo appearances of those larger than life – both physically and/or in terms of social media fanfare. Rest assured, this may seem like a DIY, everyday type lifestyle, but it’s also one I’m sure is rich in production value.

The 2019 Mr. Olympia competition exploded – despite what seemed like insurmountable odds. In 2019 we didn’t see Phil Heath, Shawn Rhoden, Flex Lewis, Shawn Rhoden, or Big Ramy, yet they sold out the arena. I’m not sure what magic Dan Solomon brought to the show but I’m going to hire him to go over to my bank and do the same magic with my accounts. And as if things couldn’t get any bigger, Dan brings the biggest shock to the 2020 Mr. Olympia in the shape of a 7’1”, 324-pound NBA Hall of Famer – Shaquille O’Neal, who will be the 2020 Honorary Olympia Weekend Ambassador.
